AT A GLANCE.
About Turtle Island.
Turtle Island is a certified scientific institute as well as a rescue center and animal shelter for turtles. As of now we are taking care of 160 different turtle species and subspecies in our facilities. This includes 10 of the 25 most endangered turtle species worldwide.
For the moment all of our turtles are housed in three sites in Graz. One of our facilities is a Category A Zoo, although the zoo is not unrestrictedly open to the public.
By appointment, however, we are happy to guide specially interested persons / groups through our facility. If you are interested in a guided tour please contact .
We operate in an international network of partner organisations and supporters to rescue the most endangered group of vertebrates on our planet – turtles.
Our team consists of many experts who are involved in all aspects concerning the preservation and protection of endangered turtle species. Our team is actively supported by volunteers who help with the care of the turtles in our breeding stations.
If you are interested in supporting our team and our work, we look forward to hearing from you. Get in touch using the contact form or by sending us an email.
We prevent the extinction of endangered turtle species. Of 160 species in our conservation centers, 11 are among the top 25 of the most endangered species and 27 are within the top 50 of most endangered species.
Our goals include protection and preservation of all turtle species but we also aim to create a unique zoo as well.
