Receiving his first Red Ear Slider for his fourth birthday henceforth coined his fascination for armoured creatures and it has only strengthened over the years.
Captive breeding, taxonomy and field research have been his three main interests. The climatically favorable residence in southern Spain offers early breeding successes of various species.
After moving to Austria, he began focusing on fewer species which is now limited to only one, highly endangered genus, Cuora, the Asian Box Turtles. East Asia is his focus of field research. His goal is to be able to have viewed every single East Asian species in the wild.
Currently, the main focus is on the field detection of Cuora zhoui, the rarest Cuora species that is known since 1990 to science, but never could be recorded from the wild so far.
He leads the ESF Studbook for Cuora trifasciata & Cuora cyclornata and is a member of the IUCN Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group (TFTSG), Turtle Survival Alliance (Field Conservation Committee) and multiple other turtle organizations.
