Rupali Ghosh and Maksud Rahman succeeded in locating an additional female of the critically endangered Northern River Terrapin in the south of Bangladesh. The 18 kg female was kept on a rope in a village pond for 16 years. After long price negotiations the female was acquired. The owner was emotionally strongly bonded with the River Terrapin.
This additional breeding female is an important step to enrich the genetic variability inside the species and an important achievment to secure the long time survival of a species on the very brink of extinction.
