Batagur turtle sent to India for conservation breeding efforts

Together with Zoo Vienna, Turtle Island has sent a male of the Northern River Terrapin to India for breeding purposes. This morning the male arrived safe and sound at the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT) in Chennai.

MCBT is specialized in breeding crocodiles and maintains two single Northern River Terrapin females, which were purchased by the well-known Indian zoologist Vijaya at Calcutta meat market in the early 1980s. Because only 11 female of this species are known to science, the merging of these three animals is an important step for the long-term survival of one of the rarest species in the world.
