Batagur baska: 24 hatchlings emerge out of 28 eggs, new record!

After our female nested in a huge concrete tank filled with sand, we changed our protocol and incubated all eggs in natural river sand.

The Northern River Terrapin, with fewer than 10 reproducing females worldwide, is one of the world’s most endangered animal species. The only breeding group, outside their countries of origin, is at Turtle Island. Our female is the largest known specimen of this species. In addition, she is strikingly light colored and very friendly. She is called the “Queen” by all who know her. Our Queen recently produced 24 new offspring, celebrating our most successful breeding year in Graz!
